Celebrating 10 years of our Kitchen/Garden program at Auburn

Apr 30, 2025

The Auburn Primary School Kitchen/Garden program is celebrating 10 years this year!

Who runs the program? In 2025, program is led by Emily Connors, a passionate gardener and educator. She has had experience in schools and working at CERES running a number of innovative programs.

When does the program run? In 2025, we’ve invested in the program to run for two days a week – Tuesday and Thursdays. Each class will have a block of sessions across six weeks.

What do the students do? The program links directly to the Science curriculum, with strong links to sustainability. Students engage with activities relating to soil, plants and water in the garden, and then use items grown in the garden in the kitchen, exploring skills relating to food preparation and kitchen safety, as well as healthy eating.

What are the benefits of the program? Aside from the links to Science, Maths, Literacy, Health and other curriculum areas, the program is designed to provide all students with the opportunity to engage in hands on activities both in the garden, and in the kitchen, learning valuable life skills. Additionally, while classes are at their Kitchen/Garden session, their class teachers are providing additional learning support to students from across the cohort in maths and/or literacy.

How can I support the program? This program can not run without the fundraising efforts of our community. Whether it be donating to a specific fundraising activity, purchasing a sausage or cake on election day, attending a parent event or our biennial Fete, or volunteering time to support one of these activities – all efforts help fund this program. Additionally, parents and carers are invited to support the program in a hands-on way, in the garden or kitchen!
